Moving More towards Digital Learning in the Elementary Classroom

Updated: May 14, 2020

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused teachers to rethink education and shift towards an online learning approach to learning.

Many schools in the United States have shifted to an online learning platform due to the Covid-19 outbreak. This looks different for all schools but involves learning online through platforms including Google Classroom, Seesaw and more. Schools are also having teachers make weekly phone calls to families and using packet work sent through the mail to engage their students in learning. This crisis has required teachers to get creative in the ways that engage and support students learning from home. Many teachers are implementing themed weeks, prizes and student choice to keep their learners actively learning throughout the nationwide shutdown.

One thing many teachers have been creating is an online Bitmoji Classroom. This online "classroom" includes links to videos, websites and assignments. This is a great way to keep all tasks in one place that is fun and visibly appealing to students.

On the left, is my online Bitmoji classroom. This product is available for free on TPT. Teachers can edit the digital classroom to look like their own classroom and edit the assignments to meet their learns needs. My students love using this Bitmoji classroom! I am planning to continue to use my online classroom throughout summer school since my district is planning on doing a fully online summer school. During summer school I will be using this classroom to plan fun activities, schedule weekly Zoom meetings and guided reading groups and engage in collaborative discussions with my summer school students. The question that remains on all teachers minds is what is next year going to look like. There are many questions about what learning next year will look like. Will we be back in the classrooms? Will there be smaller class sizes? Will we have to continue to learn online? Will we learn in a hybrid format (part online, part in school)? How will we increase sanitation school-wide?

No one knows the answer yet but we can be sure of one thing: online learning isn't going anywhere.
